Buckman is committed to providing the pulp and paper industry with highly effective products that offer the lowest possible environmental impact. We do not accept that being green means sacrifi cing performance, and this thinking is what drives our researchers. Here are a few areas where Buckman is leading the way.

While Buckman’s foundation is in traditional chemistries such as biocides and scale inhibitors, we have also looked for innovative new ways to achieve similar results with less environmental impact.
For example, breakthroughs in fundamental enzyme design and in how enzymes are stabilized have resulted in novel technology that is seeing widespread application in the paper industry. Rather than relying on petro chemical based chemicals—with varying levels of toxicity—to maintain machine cleanliness, we are now able to use enzymes. Our Maximyze®, Optimyze® and Buzyme® products are natural products that are specifi c in their activity, biodegradable and non toxic— all characteristics that embody the idea of “green.”

Recent breakthroughs include Busperse® 2727, an eco-friendly alternative for fabric and dryer cleaning, and a new 100 percent biodegradable deinking surfact-ant-BRD®2361.This product improves recycling efficiency in mills while reducing environ-mental impact.

The improvement of your highest-volume raw material entering the mill has numerous beneficial impacts down the line, from chemical usage to machine operating effi ciency.
Buckman offers new plant-derived coagulants, such as Bufloc® 5828, for improved clarification of incoming water.

Case Study
Getting More Performance with Less Steam
Return on Investment (ROI)

buckmanBullet
Increased MD tensile strength 6 percent on lowergrammage grade
A North American mill making multi-ply board from 100 percent recycled fi ber challenged Buckman to improve performance. So we replaced its traditional GPAM resins with our proprietary Bubond® 408.
Thanks to its higher cationic charge, Bubond 408 dry strength chemistry dramatically reduced steam usage, improved drainage and production and increased tensile strength.

buckmanBullet
Increased production 1.3 tph while maintaining tensile on heavier grammage grade

buckmanBullet
Reduced steam costs, saving US $1 per ton

buckmanBullet
Reduced shipping, handling and storage costs, due to higher solids content

Return on Environment (ROE) Savings
