J.D. Irving, Limited is proud to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Grand River Pellets, a pellet plant operation in Saint-Léonard, New Brunswick.

Since opening in 2019, the plant has achieved significant milestones and contributed to the advancement of sustainable energy solutions, both locally in New Brunswick and on the global stage.

Originally designed with an annual pellet production capacity of 100,000 tonnes, the team at Grand River Pellets has successfully more than doubled this capacity to 240,000 tonnes per year. These pellets, derived from byproducts of sawmilling operations, play a vital role in reducing carbon emissions.

The pellets are shipped from the Port of Belledune and support international efforts in transitioning away from coal and other high CO2-emitting fuel sources. They are responsible for displacing 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to removing more than 85,000 Canadian vehicles from the road. Furthermore, these shipping operations contribute to the success of the Port of Belledune, recognized as one of Canada's Green Energy Hubs.

The dedicated team of 34 staff and employees at Grand River Pellets has consistently surpassed production records each year since the plant's establishment and are instrumental to its success. With a focus on safety first, they have also achieved a two-year record of zero Recordable Incidents or Lost Time Incidents.
