Nova Scotia is broadening the role of wood-based energy in public infrastructure, issuing a tender to convert five public buildings to wood heat systems powered by local wood products.
The sites targeted for conversion include the Nova Scotia Community College Kingstec campus, Roseway Hospital, Digby General Hospital, Soldiers Memorial Hospital and St. Martha’s Regional Hospital.
Public Works Minister Fred Tilley said the initiative is intended to make better use of local forestry resources while supporting economic development. By increasing the use of Nova Scotia wood products, the government aims to create jobs, reduce reliance on imported fuels and strengthen long-term energy security.
The project marks the first major implementation phase of the province’s wood-use initiative announced in 2025. It also builds on existing momentum: 20 public buildings across Nova Scotia already use wood heat systems, while two additional projects are under development.
A key element of the tender is its emphasis on local supply chains. Tender documents indicate that wood procurement is expected to come primarily from small private woodlots, with lower-grade primary fuel harvested within Nova Scotia. Industry representatives say the approach could create new opportunities for forestry contractors and woodlot owners while keeping more economic value within the province.
Modern biomass systems also form part of the province’s broader strategy to decarbonize public infrastructure. Industry representatives describe today’s wood-heat facilities as automated, efficient and suitable for hospitals, campuses and other buildings requiring reliable year-round heating.
Nova Scotia has also directed departments to consider greater use of mass timber, wood pellets, biomass, biofuels and other forest-based products in public projects. Design and procurement policies have been updated accordingly to prioritize wood in new construction and renovations.
The submission deadline for the five-building tender is June 24.
