Carbonity, a joint venture between Airex Energy, Gestion Rémabec, and SUEZ, has reached a significant milestone with the production of its first tonnes of biochar at its Port-Cartier facility in Quebec.

The plant, currently in its commissioning phase, is set to become the largest biochar production facility in North America once fully operational.

Biochar is a plant-based charcoal produced through the pyrolysis of biomass—a thermal decomposition process carried out in the absence of oxygen. This material is recognized for its ability to sequester carbon in soils for hundreds of years while simultaneously improving soil fertility. As such, biochar is generating growing interest in Quebec as both an agricultural and climate solution.

He will oversee the plant’s full commissioning and lead an expansion phase planned for 2025, which could triple production capacity. With extensive experience in industrial management, Girard is expected to structure operations with a focus on continuous improvement.

The rapid and successful start-up of the facility is credited to the mobilization of teams and the commitment of the founding partners. Carbonity is thus positioning itself as a strategic player in Quebec’s bioeconomy and in the transition toward a carbon-neutral economy.
