FPInnovations’ most attended and anticipated annual course, the Pulp, Paper, and Bioproducts course, will take place from October 7 to 11, 2019 at FPInnovations’ Pointe-Claire, Quebec location.

The Woodrise 2019 conference will open its doors in a few days under the theme “Building Our Cities for Future Generations.”

Increasingly, bio-sourced products derived from biomass are gaining attention in the pulp and paper industry. For hardwood kraft-dissolving pulp mills, the production of furfural would not only enhance the use of biomass, but also generate additional revenue, and create a reliable source of furfural in North America.

Driven by a competitive market, FPInnovations’ Forestry 4.0 initiative aims at automating the forest operation sector. However, a lack of adequate communication networks reaching remote locations is a barrier to real-time supply chain management data for forestry operations.

With technical advances in the field of cellulose nanomaterials such as cellulose filaments (CFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), the development of functional forest-based materials could lead to enhanced applications in multiple industries: intelligent packaging, cosmetics, paints and coatings, foods, and advanced electronic and photonic materials, among others.

Over 400 participants attended the 2019 TAPPI Nano conference (International Conference on Nanotechnology for Renewable Materials) held in Chiba, Japan the first week of June, including several FPInnovations scientists and managers, among who gave presentations and chaired sessions.

FPInnovations’ most popular course, the Pulp, Paper, and Bioproducts Course, hit a record attendance in 2018.

The market for paper and paperboard grades is highly competitive leading many pulp and paper mills to diversify their product lines, including producing new paper grades with growth potential, while for other mills, the focus is on cost reduction or on lightweighting.

The LIGNA 2019 show in Hannover, Germany, will be taking place May 27 to 31 and this year, two representatives from FPInnovations will be offering presentations as part of the wood industry summit.

FPInnovations’ Frédéric Parent, paper and consumer products manager, will be a presenter at TAPPI’s 12th annual PaperCon taking place from May 5 to 8 in Indianapolis, Indiana, where nearly 2,000 attendees are expected to participate in technical sessions and networking events.

The program for the Woodrise 2019 conference, to be held in Quebec City from September 30 to October 4, is now complete, and attendees can look forward to an exciting range of international speakers.

Over the past year, FPInnovations’ pulp and paper experts have given several customized courses on pulp and paper topics requested by member companies.
