FPInnovations’ Frédéric Parent, paper and consumer products manager, will be a presenter at TAPPI’s 12th annual PaperCon taking place from May 5 to 8 in Indianapolis, Indiana, where nearly 2,000 attendees are expected to participate in technical sessions and networking events.

Parent will give a presentation on Wednesday, May 8 at 8:30 a.m. at the Indiana Convention Centre about preserving paper machine efficiency when developing lighter and new paper grades. As the market for paper and paperboard grades becomes more competitive, several mills are looking into market diversification and production of new grades with growth potential, while for others, cost reduction and lightweighting remain priorities. Numerous mills must use their current paper machines with minimal capital investment available for new equipment and rebuilds; therefore, paper machine efficiency is becoming increasingly critical.

Reducing web breaks on paper machines and improving quality are essential for mills developing new grades: “Work has been done on improving paper machine efficiency, but most of the research has focused on the defects and average paper strength properties. FPInnovations has focused on characterizing process variability and web uniformity,” says Parent. “We’ve developed in-depth knowledge and unique diagnostic tools that have been used successfully to address paper machine efficiency and end-user runnability issues.”

Stéphan Larivière, part of FPinnovations’ business development team, will also attend. “The American paper industry is a large market and PaperCon is an opportunity for FPInnovations to promote its services and expertise in papermaking,” says Larivière

PaperCon is billed as the world’s largest technical conference for the paper and packaging industry, attracting international delegates and speakers, and creating a forum for professionals to learn about new strategies, processes, and technologies. Last year, over 2,000 attendees were at the conference.
