Over the past year, FPInnovations’ pulp and paper experts have given several customized courses on pulp and paper topics requested by member companies.

Our team travels to clients’ sites across North America to share their knowledge and discuss solutions that positively impact their companies. We spoke with Xuejun Zou, Pointe-Claire, Quebec manager of fibre production and director of pulp, paper, and bioproducts training courses, to learn more.

What types of training courses are offered by FPInnovations’ pulp and paper team?

We offer training and workshops in an incredibly wide range of topics including mechanical and chemical pulping and bleaching, chemical recovery, causticizing operations, energy efficiency, recycling, papermaking, wet-end chemistry, calendering, paper testing, printing quality, pressroom runnability, tissue 101, as well as on emerging technologies that are relevant to pulp and paper products such as printed electronics and 3D printing.

The training is given by FPInnovations experts in each area. We can cover the basics or provide in-depth training, depending on the target audience. In some cases, we collaborate with partners. For example, we work with CanmetEnegry on energy management courses and chemical suppliers for wet-end chemistry training. We provide training to over 100 people each year and the requests are growing.

Who goes to the courses?

At mills, staff such as operators, process engineers, superintendents, and technical staff attend. In some cases, mill managers and administrative staff will also be there. When we hold training sessions or workshops at head offices, we have accountants, legal staff, and senior managers in attendance. The training is covered under FPInnovations’ technology transfer (TX program) so there is no additional cost to our members.

What are some of the gains made by member-companies that have requested courses?

Our courses improve the technical-knowledge skill set of mill operators, engineers, and technical staff. Many mills are facing waves of retirement and the courses facilitate knowledge transfer for a new generation of mill staff. We’ve also provided follow-up services such as preparing technical marketing materials and establishing best practices. We issue a certificate after each training session, which can be used to fulfill the requirements for some professional designations, such as engineers.
