Engaging Québec’s private forest landowners

FSC

On June 4, FSC Canada participated in the Fédération des Producteurs Forestiers du Québec (FPFQ) Annual Assembly, bringing together just over 100 delegates representing Québec’s 162,900 private forest landowners.

FSC Canada attended as both an exhibitor and event sponsor, contributing to important conversations about the current and future state of private forest management in the province.

Discussions reflected both the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. Delegates addressed the ongoing forestry crisis, including tariffs and mill closures, as well as the growing need to adapt to climate change through increased diversification. A keynote presentation by Christian Messier (Habitat) emphasized the importance of resilient forest ecosystems in a changing climate.

The event also highlighted practical tools and emerging insights to support landowners:

  • A newly launched, free mobile application designed specifically for private forest owners provides easy access to property-level forest information, including satellite imagery and the ability to generate preliminary forest management plans.
  • Results from the latest FPFQ survey offered an updated profile of Québec’s private landowners, shedding light on their priorities, interests, and engagement with forest management.

These discussions reinforced the significant opportunity to expand responsible forest management on private lands in Québec.

FSC Canada values opportunities like Fédération des Producteurs Forestiers du Québec (FPFQ) Annual Assembly to engage directly with private landowners and sector partners, and we remain committed to supporting sustainable forest management across Québec’s diverse ownership landscape.
