GO Transit's Network Operations Centre (NOC) has set new standards for sustainable construction by prioritising environmentally certified building materials, including Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood.
The 4,400-square-metre facility, which oversees the entire GO rail and bus network, recently achieved LEED Gold certification.
The team prioritised sustainable construction through FSC-certified wood sourcing, local manufacturing, and recycled materials—reflecting their commitment to environmentally responsible building practices.
The NOC also incorporated cutting-edge features to reduce the building's energy consumption by 41% compared to similar facilities. These include electrochromic glass that adjusts its tint automatically and a white roof that minimises heat absorption.
Water conservation measures, such as drought-resistant native vegetation and low-flow plumbing, have reduced potable water usage by 30%. The facility also features low-VOC materials throughout its interior to protect both environmental and human health.
The NOC achieved exceptional sustainability metrics, diverting 75% of construction waste from landfills through recycling initiatives—a notable accomplishment in Canada, which ranks second globally in LEED-certified sustainable construction according to the Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC).
The NOC joins other LEED-certified Metrolinx facilities, including Agincourt and Bramalea GO stations, demonstrating the agency's ongoing commitment to sustainable transit infrastructure development.
Congratulation to Metrolinx!
