Forestry practices have been intensified for centuries to meet the growing demand for forest products.

Today, the challenge is to balance this increasing demand with the urgent need to protect our forests. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is exploring ways to ensure that intensified forestry not only boosts productivity but also delivers long-term environmental and social benefits.

FSC is working to uncover the broader effect of plantation forestry. With support from an advisory group that includes members from FSC International, FSC South Africa, and FSC Australia & New Zealand, the project aims to understand how FSC-certified intensified plantations improve the lives of local communities and create lasting environmental and economic benefits that ripple across the entire landscape.

The first phase of the project "Sustainable Intensification and Shared Values in the Wider Landscape" aimed to develop a method for identifying the benefits of FSC-certified plantations beyond their immediate areas. This method was tested in Australia, New Zealand, and Southern Africa, providing valuable insights but also highlighting the need for further refinement.

FSC would like to share these findings with members and stakeholders in an upcoming webinar.
