With increasing urbanization comes an increased tax on our environment and its ability to sustain us.
Swedish-based sustainable packaging company BillerudKorsnäs is doing its part to meet consumers where they're at – in megacities – to lead the charge in offering environmentally-friendly, sustainable packaging solutions. To do this, the company conducted a survey, the first in an ongoing initiative to find out what people think about packaging sustainability – to get a sense of three basis things: what do citizens think about megacities, what do they think about packaging sustainability, and how do they see their own role, and that of cities and brand owners – in creating that sustainability.
The survey was conducted in 16 cities, including New York, Tokyo, Jakarta, and Paris. It revealed some interesting data, and encouragingly, that consumers view their own role and participation in creating a sustainable future not only as an option, but as crucial. The results suggest that consumers are willing to pay a premium for sustainable packaging solutions when brands are able to help them change their behaviour in convenient ways. Interestingly, Asia demonstrated the strongest desire for change, and indicated a fervent belief in sustainable packaging being part of a sustainability challenge.
When asked what their 'dream results from packaging development' are, responses were consistent across the globe. Folks are looking for fun and easy ways to recycle, and solutions that prolong the freshness of their products, improve food safety, and decrease food waste. A tall order, perhaps, but the results provide industry with critical intelligence on where best to target their efforts for maximum payoff – to their own bottom lines, and to that of our environment.
