Since 2015, Stora Enso's Sunila mill has been producing lignin and features a pilot plant for refining it into hard carbon, a potential replacement for graphite in lithium-ion batteries.
Stora Enso has now announced the sale of the mill's real estate in Kotka, Finland, to Aalto Development, with the transaction expected to close by the end of the year.
It follows its decision to divest 1.4 million hectares in Sweden. So, it raises the question: Is this part of a new strategic shift, or simply a shortcut to reduce debt?
