Can the energy consumption of a fine paper machine be reduced?

Yes. In fact, there are more opportunities on a fine paper machine than on a linerboard machine. This is because a fine paper sheet must be dried twice, first before the size press and then before the reel.

By focusing on building a base sheet with uniform basis weight and moisture profiles, the amount of over-drying required to produce a flat sheet to the size press can be significantly reduced.

This directly reduces the amount of energy required. If the size pick-up is uniform and the moisture profile can be maintained to the reel, the target reel moisture uniformity can be achieved without the need for over-drying or the subsequent rewetting with profiling showers.
