The Brazilian pulp producer is combining artificial intelligence, satellites, monitoring cameras and drones to detect fires sooner and direct response teams more efficiently.

Suzano is expanding its use of technology to prevent and combat wildfires across its eucalyptus plantations and conservation areas in Brazil.

Its monitoring network combines satellite imagery, cameras installed on observation towers, artificial intelligence and drones. By integrating these tools, Suzano aims to identify smoke earlier, confirm incidents in the field and help response teams prioritize and direct firefighting resources.

Satellite systems provide broad coverage across large forest areas, while tower-mounted cameras support continuous monitoring. Artificial intelligence analyzes images for signs of smoke and automatically alerts the teams responsible for investigating potential fires.

Drones can then help verify conditions on the ground and pinpoint incidents more precisely. According to Suzano, the integrated system also reduces false alarms and enables firefighting resources to be deployed more effectively.

The company reports an average response time of 35 minutes between detecting an incident and mobilizing its teams. Suzano also says that, over the past three years, 85% of fires were controlled before developing into more serious incidents.

The technology is supported by trained personnel, fire brigades and coordination with neighbouring communities. Through its Mutual Assistance Plan, Suzano works with public agencies, companies and regional institutions to coordinate emergency responses and share resources when necessary.

The pulp producer is also evaluating additional technologies, including low-Earth-orbit satellite detection systems and long-range, beyond-visual-line-of-sight drones equipped with thermal cameras.

Suzano is testing remotely operated equipment capable of creating firebreaks without requiring operators to work directly in hazardous areas. The company says this could make preventive work faster while reducing risks to employees.

The initiative is part of Suzano’s continuing efforts to protect its eucalyptus plantations and permanently protected areas.
