Ahlstrom Kaukauna to Modernize T14 Specialty Paper Line with New Headbox

Ahlstrom will install Bellmer TurboJetter headbox technology on its T14 line in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, as part of a modernization project aimed at improving sheet quality, process stability and machine maintainability.

Ahlstrom Plans 2027 Headbox Upgrade at Kaukauna Mill

Ahlstrom is moving ahead with a modernization of its T14 specialty paper line at the Kaukauna mill, where a new Bellmer TurboJetter headbox is scheduled to be installed in June 2027.

The T14 machine produces lightweight specialty papers for food packaging applications, with basis weights ranging from 15 to 49 g/m². For grades in this range, headbox performance is particularly important because consistency in stock distribution can directly affect formation, basis-weight profile and overall sheet uniformity.

According to the companies, the project is intended to improve product quality while also making the machine easier to operate and maintain. The new headbox is expected to provide more stable process control and simplify maintenance activities over the equipment lifecycle.

The upgrade is significant from an operational standpoint because specialty packaging grades typically require tight control of machine conditions and product specifications. Improvements in headbox performance can help reduce variability at the wet end and support more consistent production, although the companies have not disclosed specific targets for output, efficiency gains or downtime reduction.

The project also reflects continued investment in the Kaukauna operation as demand for functional and food-contact packaging papers places greater emphasis on quality consistency, runnability and production reliability.

Bellmer and Ahlstrom are working on project execution ahead of the planned June 2027 installation and start-up. No financial details were disclosed.
