What is COVID-19?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in people and can cause symptoms similar to the common cold. A novel coronavirus causes a respiratory disease commonly referred to as COVID-19 and has not previously been seen in humans. COVID-19 presents with respiratory illness like symptoms that include fever, cough and shortness of breath that can become quickly life-threatening. Research shows it spreads primarily through person-to-person contact.
Scientists and health experts are working vigorously to learn about the new strain.
How Can I Protect Myself?
Current guidance from the CDC and the White House indicate the following:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap is not readily available, use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol though soap and water is your best bet.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Practice social distancing and avoid gatherings of more than 10 people
- Stay home if you are sick
