Ridgefield Supply Co. owner says softwood tariffs not working as intended

The softwood lumber dispute between the U.S. and Canada stretches back to 1982, but the impact on U.S. lumber suppliers and consumers is at a high point, said the owner and CEO of a local supply company.

Margaret Price, of Ridgefield Supply Co., said some types of wood have seen a 24 percent price increase over the last 16 months, amounting to an additional $10,000 to build a median-priced home in Connecticut. Softwood, which accounts for about 10 percent of the cost of a home, is priced at nearly an all-time high, Price said.
