Domtar will indefinitely idle its Grenada, Mississippi, paper mill in September, leaving about 160 employees without work.
The decision, according to regional news coverage, was attributed to persistent challenges in the newsprint market.
The Grenada facility, which has operated since 1989, houses one of North America’s most modern newsprint machines and has long been considered a cornerstone of the local economy. Over the decades, the mill changed ownership several times—from Newsprint South to Resolute Forest Products, and most recently Domtar, following its 2023 acquisition of Resolute.
Community leaders acknowledged the impact of the closure while emphasizing resilience. Greater Grenada Partnership president and CEO Matthew Harrison described the announcement as a “moment of transition” but stressed that Grenada has repeatedly shown its ability to adapt. He noted that efforts are already underway with state and local partners to attract new investment and create future opportunities.
The company stated it will provide career transition resources and benefits guidance to affected employees as operations wind down.
