The Södra Foundation for Research, Development and Education has awarded SEK 12.5 million to 11 research projects aimed at advancing forestry and the forest industry.

These initiatives promise to drive innovation, sustainability, and economic growth while addressing climate challenges.

“The Södra Foundation is a vital part of promoting research for a green transition. By investing in these projects, we are building a sustainable future where forests contribute to climate solutions and economic growth,” said Henric Brage, Head of Innovation at Södra.

The funded projects span multiple areas, including forestry, wood, pulp, and chemicals. Highlights include:

  • A climate research project using radar technology to monitor forest health and study CO₂ and water dynamics in birch and pine forests.
  • A study on fertilisation in fertile soils to enhance forest productivity, benefiting both the industry and carbon sequestration efforts.
  • Research aimed at improving the use of sawn wood grades in construction for higher value and greater climate benefits.
  • A major project exploring pathways for a fossil-free forestry value chain.

Henric Brage expressed enthusiasm for the projects’ potential and encouraged researchers with unselected proposals to return with new ideas.

Since its establishment in 1995, the Södra Foundation has granted close to SEK 300 million to nearly 250 projects, fostering innovation and progress in the bio-based economy.
