Georgia-Pacific's Consumer Products business has joined the Circular Action Alliance (CAA) as a founding member, signaling its commitment to shaping the future of extended producer responsibility (EPR) laws for paper and packaging in the United States.

EPR laws aim to shift the responsibility for managing packaging waste from municipalities to producers. CAA is currently the sole organization approved to implement these laws in the U.S., acting as the Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) in California and Colorado. They have also submitted program plans for Oregon and Minnesota, and are involved in Maryland's advisory council.

By joining CAA, Georgia-Pacific aims to contribute its expertise and insights to the development and implementation of EPR programs. John Mulcahy, vice president-stewardship for Georgia-Pacific, stated that the company's involvement allows them to align EPR implementation with their own Stewardship Framework, which focuses on responsible resource management. They believe their participation will add value to the process of establishing state-level rules.

Georgia-Pacific joins a prestigious group of founding board members, including Amazon, The Coca-Cola Company, Colgate-Palmolive, Conagra Brands, Danone, Ferrero, General Mills, Keurig Dr Pepper, The Kraft Heinz Company, L’Oréal, Mars Incorporated, Mondelēz International, Nestlé USA, Niagara Bottling, PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, SC Johnson, Target, and Walmart. Charlie Schwarze, CAA Board Chair, emphasized the importance of Georgia-Pacific's experience and leadership as EPR laws are implemented across states. CAA CEO Jeff Fielkow highlighted the organization's commitment to strong producer governance and effective representation of producer priorities, emphasizing their mission to help all producers comply with EPR regulations. The move underscores the growing momentum behind EPR programs in the U.S. and the increasing involvement of major industry players.
