Kruger Inc. has announced a $6.5-million investment to implement an innovation project aimed at diversifying production at its Wayagamack Mill in Trois-Rivières.
This initiative will enable the mill to manufacture innovative label paper grades, reinforcing its leadership in Québec and North America.
The new state-of-the-art equipment will enhance the mill's capacity for innovation, versatility, and sustainability, securing the future of its operations and the 285 jobs it supports. The announcement was made in the presence of Jean Boulet, Minister of Labour and Minister Responsible for the Mauricie Region, and Sylvain Bricault, General Manager of the Kruger Wayagamack Mill.
The initiative is supported by a $2.5-million contribution from the Government of Québec through the Programme Innovation Bois of the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts. This funding underscores the government's commitment to revitalizing the forestry sector and strengthening regional economies.
Since 2017, the Wayagamack Mill has been transitioning towards specialty paper, including backing paper, an area in which it has developed solid expertise. While it will continue producing lightweight coated paper used in magazine-type publications, this latest investment marks a significant step in its diversification strategy.
Government officials praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of innovation in maintaining competitiveness. “The forestry sector is a priority for our government,” said Maïté Blanchette Vézina, Minister of Natural Resources and Forests. “Today’s announcement exemplifies what it takes to revitalize the industry and regional economies.”
Jean Boulet echoed this sentiment: “Innovation is one of our region’s strengths. This project will ensure Kruger remains at the forefront of the forestry sector.”
Kruger executives also emphasized the value of government support. “As a proud Québec company, our Wayagamack Mill will position itself as a leader in North America's steadily growing label paper market,” said Justin Paillé, Senior Vice President, Manufacturing, Kruger Pulp & Paper Division.
This latest project builds on Kruger’s long-standing commitment to adapting to market changes. Since acquiring the Wayagamack Mill in 2001, the company has invested nearly $1 billion to modernize and diversify its operations.
