The Ontario government is committing nearly $280,000 to establish a new action centre aimed at helping over 330 workers affected by layoffs at the AV Terrace Bay pulp mill.
The centre will provide essential services and training to help displaced workers find new employment, whether in the forestry sector or other industries.
“Our government stands with the workers and families in Terrace Bay who have been impacted by these layoffs,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “By investing in this action centre, we’re ensuring that workers receive the support, resources, and opportunities they need to secure rewarding jobs for themselves and their families.”
The centre, operated by the Township of Terrace Bay, will remain open until June 16, 2025. It will offer a range of services, including workshops, seminars, peer-to-peer support, and job search assistance. A comprehensive needs assessment survey will be conducted to tailor support to the workers' short- and long-term employment goals.
Kevin Holland, Associate Minister of Forestry and Forest Products and MPP for Thunder Bay–Atikokan, acknowledged the challenges caused by the mill's closure. “While we work with our partners to get AV Terrace Bay operational again, this new action centre will equip these hardworking men and women with the tools they need to support themselves, their families, and their community.”
In addition to skills upgrading through courses and workshops, the centre will provide practical job search assistance, including interview training, resume building, and access to job postings. These resources aim to help affected workers prepare for well-paying careers, particularly in the skilled trades.
Terrace Bay Mayor Paul Malashewski expressed his appreciation for the provincial support. “The Action Centre will be a valuable resource for workers looking to upgrade their skills. It will also play a crucial role in developing the North’s workforce, making the region more attractive for future investments,” he said.
