The Newfoundland and Labrador government has extended an agreement with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited to ensure the continued operation of the mill and support the province’s forestry industry.
The six-month extension, effective October 1, 2024, involves Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro purchasing excess green energy from Corner Brook Pulp and Paper’s Deer Lake Power assets. In return, Corner Brook Pulp and Paper will continue its efforts to identify new revenue streams from sustainable wood-based projects.
The agreement provides flexibility for Hydro during peak winter demand, with no impact on ratepayers.
The provincial government remains optimistic about the future of the forestry industry and continues to work closely with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper to explore long-term solutions for the mill and its workers.
“Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited continues to play a key role in Newfoundland and Labrador’s integrated forest sector,” said Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture Minister Gerry Byrne. “Extending this agreement is another step towards securing the future of our forest industry and ensuring the sustainability of this vital industry.”
Deputy Premier Siobhan Coady added, “The extension of this agreement will ensure excess energy reserves for Hydro during winter months. At the same time, CBPP will have additional time to explore opportunities for long-term sustainability for employees of the mill and the forestry industry.”
The provincial government remains optimistic about the future of the forest industry and maintains an ongoing dialogue with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper.
