Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) has announced the closure of its corrugated plant in East Point, Georgia, near Atlanta, affecting 103 employees.

The company explained that consolidating production from this full-line plant to other locations within its network would allow it to better serve customers with improved efficiency.

This decision comes at a time when PCA has largely bucked the industry trend of fiber plant shutdowns and workforce reductions. Over the past decade, the company has maintained a relatively stable workforce, in contrast to many of its competitors. In fact, PCA is set to open a new box plant in Phoenix this spring, which will replace an existing corrugated products plant in the area.

Despite this closure, PCA reported strong performance for the third quarter of 2024, setting all-time quarterly records for containerboard production, total box shipments, and shipments per day.

The closure is part of a broader trend in the packaging industry, where companies are reassessing their operations to enhance efficiency and competitiveness. For instance, Georgia-Pacific, another major player in the sector, recently announced the closure of its Milan corrugated facility in Michigan, which will result in the loss of 119 jobs.

As the packaging industry continues to adapt to changing market dynamics, companies like PCA are making strategic moves to optimize their operations and maintain their competitive edge.
