Packaging Corporation of America has announced the idling of its Wallula mill, resulting in the layoff of about 300 of its 450 employees due to economic conditions.
The plant is expected to resume operations later this year. The company's corrugated products facilities in Richland and Wallula are unaffected and will remain open. The affected pulp and paper mill produces around 1,800 tons of unbleached paper and corrugated medium daily. Packaging Corporation is Walla Walla County's ninth-largest employer. The layoff announcement was made without prior warning under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires advance notice for layoffs affecting 100 or more employees.
