Smurfit Westrock has announced the permanent closure of one paper machine at its La Tuque, Quebec, mill, citing ongoing scale and cost challenges affecting the asset’s competitiveness.

The machine has an annual production capacity of 127,000 tons of solid bleached sulfate (SBS).

According to the company, the decision forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen its SBS portfolio and support the long-term performance of its paperboard operations. By concentrating production on more competitive assets, Smurfit Westrock aims to better align its manufacturing footprint with current market conditions.

In connection with the La Tuque shutdown, Smurfit Westrock will also permanently close its extrusion facility in Pointe-aux-Trembles, Quebec, which converts grades produced on the affected paper machine. The combined closures will result in a limited workforce reduction, impacting approximately 30 employees at La Tuque and around 60 at Pointe-aux-Trembles.

The company stated that affected employees will receive support measures, including career transition assistance and relocation opportunities where feasible. Severance packages will be provided in accordance with company policies and applicable labor union agreements.

“This was a difficult but necessary decision to align with market realities and strengthen our long-term position,” said Laurent Sellier, president and CEO of Smurfit Westrock’s North America Region. “We remain committed to our people, our operations in Canada and to delivering reliable, quality service to our customers.”

Smurfit Westrock emphasized that the move is intended to reinforce the resilience of its North American paperboard operations while maintaining a strong presence in Canada.
