Toilet paper and paper towels are everyday essentials in American households, but their environmental impact is often overlooked.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) aims to change that perception by highlighting the sustainable practices that define the U.S. tissue industry. Contrary to popular belief, the production of these paper products does not contribute to deforestation but instead relies on responsible resource management and recycling efforts.

The manufacturing of toilet paper and paper towels in the U.S. is based on two primary inputs: wood and recycled paper. Wood used in this industry is sourced from sustainably managed forests, where trees are continuously replanted to maintain ecological balance. The wood materials used include branches, tree tops, and other byproducts unsuitable for construction, ensuring that no part of the tree goes to waste.

Recycled paper also plays a significant role, with nearly 90% of U.S. tissue manufacturers incorporating it into their products. In 2023 alone, around 3.9 million tons of recycled paper were used by the industry. This recycled content not only contributes to the production of paper towels and toilet paper but is also integral to packaging materials like paperboard tubes.

However, the debate between using recycled paper versus fresh wood pulp is nuanced. Both materials offer distinct benefits in terms of absorbency, strength, and softness, catering to varied consumer preferences. The challenge for manufacturers lies in balancing these inputs to meet customer demand while maintaining sustainable practices.

The notion that the U.S. tissue industry causes deforestation is a misconception. U.S. forestland has remained stable since the 1950s, with more than a billion trees planted annually. The industry’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated through ongoing efforts to improve water management, reduce emissions, and enhance wildlife habitats.

Since 2011, AF&PA has been at the forefront of setting and achieving sustainability goals. As the industry moves towards 2030, its focus remains on innovation and continuous improvement, ensuring that everyday paper products like toilet paper and paper towels remain responsible choices for consumers.
