Tetra Pak, a leading food processing and packaging solutions company, has been recognized for its groundbreaking paper-based barrier material innovation, earning the Resource Efficiency Award at the Sustainable Packaging News Awards 2024.
This innovative solution, developed in collaboration with Lactogal, marks a significant step forward in sustainable packaging. By replacing the traditional aluminum foil barrier with a paper-based alternative, Tetra Pak has managed to reduce the carbon footprint of aseptic food packaging by up to one-third.
The Carbon Trust has independently verified this impressive carbon reduction achievement. The increased use of paperboard, from an average of 70% to approximately 80%, coupled with the integration of plant-based polymers, elevates the total renewable content of aseptic cartons to a remarkable 90%.
Marco Marchetti, Vice President Packaging Materials, Sales and Distribution Solutions at Tetra Pak, expressed the company's honor in receiving the award and pride in collaborating with Lactogal. He emphasized that this innovation reaffirms Tetra Pak's commitment to sustainability and its dedication to developing packaging solutions that safeguard both food and the planet.
Tetra Pak's paper-based barrier material offers a compelling solution to the growing demand for low-carbon, renewable packaging materials. By addressing the need for sustainable alternatives to aluminum foil, this innovation empowers the food industry to reduce its environmental impact while maintaining the highest standards of food safety and quality.
