White Birch Paper is gearing up to enter the recycled kraft paper market with a new production line at its Stadacona Mill in Quebec City, Canada.

The company announced that starting September 2024, it will begin manufacturing 100% recycled kraft paper, marking a significant expansion of its product portfolio.

The new machine at Stadacona Mill is expected to produce approximately 120,000 metric tons of recycled kraft paper annually.This substantial output will cater to a wide range of applications, including:

  • Bags and e-commerce packaging
  • Shipping void fill
  • Retail counter rolls
  • Coating base
  • Gray bogus
  • Packaging medium

The recycled kraft paper will be available in various basis weights, from lightweight 24.5 lb (40 gsm) up to heavier 74 lb (120 gsm) for bag and e-commerce grades. Medium and containerboard grades will range from 12 lb (60 gsm) to 26 lb (127 gsm).

White Birch Paper emphasizes the eco-friendly nature of its new product line. The kraft paper will be manufactured using 100% post-consumer materials, aligning with the company's commitment to sustainability. Despite being recycled, the paper is designed to offer exceptional burst and tear strength, making it suitable for diverse packaging needs.

Stadacona Mill: A History of Innovation

The Stadacona Mill, which has been part of White Birch Paper since 2004, has a long history of adapting to market demands. Originally built in 1927, the mill has undergone numerous upgrades and investments to improve its environmental performance, product quality, and overall efficiency. The addition of the recycled kraft paper machine further diversifies the mill's capabilities, which already include newsprint, commercial paper, and paperboard production.

White Birch Paper has been a prominent player in the paper industry since 1941. With three mills in Quebec, Canada, the company produces a variety of paper products, including newsprint, commercial paper, and specialty papers. The move into recycled kraft paper production represents the company's latest effort to meet evolving market needs and environmental considerations.
