Stora Enso is under investigation for an environmental incident at its harvesting site in Kainuu, Finland.

On August 15, 2024, it was discovered that forestry machinery had crossed the Hukkajoki river, which is home to a population of highly endangered freshwater pearl mussels. This incident is being investigated as an aggravated nature conservation offence.

Seppo Parvi, Country Manager for Finland at Stora Enso, acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, stating, "It is evident that our guidelines have not been followed. What has happened is completely contrary to our values and sustainability commitments." The company is cooperating with police and other authorities to investigate the incident and is committed to refining its guidelines and procedures to prevent future occurrences.

Stora Enso's immediate priority is to repair the damage and support restoration efforts led by Metsähallitus. The company has also decided to participate in the LIFE Revives programme as part of its commitment to environmental responsibility. Increased monitoring of harvesting sites, especially in critical mussel habitats, will be implemented to ensure compliance with sustainability practices.

As one of the largest private forest owners in the world, Stora Enso's response to this incident will be closely monitored by environmental groups and industry observers alike.
