Mercer extends Rosenthal shutdown

International News

Mercer International has announced that the maintenance shutdown at its Mercer Rosenthal pulp mill in Germany will now extend through the entire month of September 2026.

Originally scheduled to last two weeks, the outage has been lengthened to cover the full month. The company did not disclose the reasons for the revised schedule.

Mercer said it is working closely with its production, wood procurement, logistics and pulp sales teams to coordinate the extended shutdown with customers and other stakeholders.

Located in Rosenthal am Rennsteig, the mill produces approximately 360,000 tonnes of northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp annually for the paper and tissue industries.

The site also manufactures tall oil and lignin, and operates Thuringia's largest biomass power plant, with a capacity of 413 MW thermal and 57 MW electrical. The facility is fully energy self-sufficient while also supplying electricity to the public grid.

Mercer Rosenthal employs approximately 400 people, including apprentices, and serves primarily the European market while also supplying customers internationally.

Mercer International is a global forest products company with operations in Germany, Canada and the United States. Its consolidated annual production capacity includes 2.1 million tonnes of pulp, 960 million board feet of lumber, 210,000 cubic metres of cross-laminated timber (CLT), 45,000 cubic metres of glulam, 17 million pallets, and 230,000 metric tonnes of biofuels.
