Metsä Board, a key player in Finland’s paperboard industry, has successfully concluded its change negotiations regarding potential temporary layoffs at several of its Finnish mills.

The negotiations, initiated on 28 October 2024, involved around 1,100 employees across seven mills: Joutseno, Kaskinen, Kemi, Kyro, Tampere, Simpele, and Äänekoski.

The discussions were aimed at addressing potential production adjustments due to low delivery volumes and uncertain demand conditions for paperboard in 2025. If required, the temporary layoffs could last a maximum of 90 days and be implemented in several phases throughout the upcoming year. Final decisions regarding the specifics, such as allocation, duration, and timing of the layoffs, will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Metsä Board continues to focus on sustainability and efficiency, aiming for complete fossil-free operations and raw materials by the end of 2030. The company, part of the Metsä Group, produced sales of EUR 1.9 billion in 2023 and employs around 2,300 people, reflecting its commitment to the future of paperboard production while promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion.
