Metsä Board, a leading producer of lightweight and high-quality paperboard solutions, is moving forward with a significant investment to modernize its Simpele folding boxboard mill, located in Simpele, Finland.

The project aims to enhance product quality, increase production efficiency, and reduce the carbon footprint of the mill's operations and products.

The €60 million investment will be used to modernize the pre-drying section and install a state-of-the-art coating section on the production line. These upgrades will improve the print quality and visual consistency of the MetsäBoard Classic FBB product, while also enabling the company to transition to fossil-free alternatives in its paperboard production process.

The modernization project is expected to be completed in stages, with the first phase scheduled for the second half of 2025. The company has already secured the necessary permits and initiated preliminary work at the mill.

Metsä Board is committed to ensuring uninterrupted service and product availability throughout the modernization process. The upgraded Simpele mill is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2025.

This investment is part of a broader modernization plan for the Simpele mill, which may include upgrades to the mechanical pulp production, paperboard finishing area, and a new power plant.
