Metsä Board, facing prolonged weak profitability, announced plans to close its Tako board mill and enhance the operational efficiency of its Kyro mill.
These measures, aimed at improving competitiveness and profitability, will impact approximately 360 employees.
The company cited high energy costs and the small size of the Tako mill's production lines as key factors contributing to its closure. The decision to close Tako is expected to improve Metsä Board's EBITDA by approximately €30 million annually.
Change negotiations with employees at both mills are underway and are expected to last at least six weeks. If the closure proceeds, production at Tako will cease in 2025. The company emphasized that the closure would not impact customer deliveries as its overall production capacity remains sufficient to meet demand.
Metsä Board, part of the Metsä Group, reported a turnover of €1.9 billion in 2023 and employs approximately 2,300 people. Metsä Group, whose parent company is owned by more than 90,000 Finnish forest owners, achieved a turnover of €6.1 billion in the same year.
