Metsä Fibre has concluded negotiations with its workforce regarding potential temporary layoffs at the Joutseno pulp mill

The negotiations, which began in early August 2024, involved all 190 employees at the facility.

The outcome of the negotiations allows Metsä Fibre to implement temporary layoffs as needed between September 2024 and January 2025 due to current market conditions. The maximum duration of any individual layoff period is 90 days. Specific details regarding the allocation, amount, and timing of these layoffs will be determined by the end of the year.

“This decision was not taken lightly,” said a spokesperson for Metsä Fibre. “However, adapting to current market conditions is essential to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Joutseno pulp mill and the jobs it provides.”

Metsä Fibre emphasizes its commitment to employee well-being and will provide further details and support to employees impacted by the layoffs.

Metsä Fibre produces pulp, sawn timber, and bioproducts, and reported sales of EUR 2.5 billion in 2023. This decision reflects the ongoing challenges in the pulp industry as companies adapt to fluctuating demand.
