Metsä Spring, the innovation arm of Metsä Group, is advancing its moulded fibre packaging line with the launch of the Muoto Laminated Fibre series.

Developed in collaboration with Amcor, the new trays are now moving into industrial testing with selected customers.

The Muoto Laminated Fibre series builds on the success of Metsä Spring’s Uncoated Fibre products, first introduced in 2024. That line earned positive feedback from pilot customers and consumers in takeaway and serving applications. Earlier this month, the Muoto Twin Uncoated Fibre range won a ScanStar award, a Nordic prize for innovative and sustainable packaging.

For more demanding food applications

Unlike the earlier uncoated series, the new laminated fibre trays are designed to meet the needs of more demanding food industry uses, including meat, poultry, and ready meals. The trays combine Metsä Spring’s smooth moulded fibre with Amcor’s advanced barrier film liners.

The hybrid design provides enhanced sealability and barrier protection, making the solution suitable for modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and vacuum skin packaging (VSP). The trays are recyclable in the carton stream and free of added PFAS, reducing plastic use without compromising food safety.

Advanced technology and sustainability

Manufactured from renewable Nordic wood fibre, the trays benefit from a novel multi-layer structure developed with Valmet. This approach creates lightweight yet sturdy products compatible with automated packaging lines.

“Our aim with Muoto has always been to create packaging that combines functionality and sustainability with an eco-conscious design,” said Niklas von Weymarn, CEO of Metsä Spring. “With the Laminated Fibre series, we are entering a new phase – moving from successful pilot trials to industrial testing with demanding food applications.”

Towards commercial rollout

The first commercial pilot cases for Muoto Laminated Fibre trays are expected in 2026. Feedback from testing will guide further development, including new sizes and additional packaging concepts.

“The collaboration with Amcor has been instrumental in developing a solution that meets the strict requirements of the food industry,” von Weymarn added. “This is just the beginning—industrial testing will give us valuable insights to expand the range and refine our solutions together with customers.”
