Metsä Group’s tissue paper business has announced a comprehensive plan to enhance the long-term competitiveness of its Kreuzau mill in Germany.
In response to rising energy and raw material costs in a challenging market, the company aims to secure the mill’s future profitability and sustainability.
The plan includes several key measures: targeted investments in modernizing production equipment, efficiency improvements, and capacity adjustments. A major aspect involves closing one paper machine that has reached the end of its lifecycle, aligning production, and converting capacities to focus solely on consumer tissue products. These efforts aim to strengthen Metsä’s position as a leader in sustainable tissue manufacturing.
However, the proposed changes are expected to impact up to 120 jobs at the Kreuzau mill. Negotiations with the works council have begun to address the personnel adjustments and find solutions for those affected.
“We are committed to ensuring the long-term success of the Kreuzau mill,” said Tobias Lüning, SVP West and Country Manager of Metsä Tissue GmbH. “While these steps are difficult, they are essential to maintain our competitiveness in the German market for sustainable tissue products.”
As one of Europe’s largest tissue production facilities, the Kreuzau mill serves Central European markets with fresh fiber-based tissue paper. Metsä Tissue remains focused on sustainable innovation and aligning its operations with evolving market demands.
Metsä Tissue is one of Europe's leading manufacturers of tissue paper products for the home and households and one of the world's leading manufacturers of greaseproof paper products.
