Metsä Board will modernize the board machine winder at its Kemi mill in Finland to improve product quality, production efficiency and supply chain reliability.

The project will be carried out during the mill’s annual maintenance shutdown, scheduled for October and November 2026. Metsä Board did not disclose the value of the new investment.

The modernization will strengthen the mill’s finishing operations and improve operational stability. Tomi Seppä, VP of the Kemi Board Mill, said the upgrade would support the production of consistent, high-quality products while helping ensure dependable deliveries to customers.

With an annual production capacity of approximately 465,000 tonnes, Kemi is the world’s largest producer of coated white-top kraftliner. The mill’s products are used as the top layer in corrugated packaging applications worldwide.

The latest investment builds on a EUR 110 million development program completed at Kemi in 2023. That project increased the mill’s annual white kraftliner capacity from 425,000 to 465,000 tonnes and included improvements to production, finishing and logistics operations.

Metsä Board produces folding boxboard, foodservice board and white kraftliner from fresh wood fibre. The company reported sales of EUR 1.8 billion in 2025 and employs approximately 1,900 people.
