Metsä Group has inaugurated its expanded and modernised tissue paper mill in Mariestad, Sweden, following a €370 million investment described as one of the largest in the European tissue industry. The project strengthens Metsä Tissue’s position in Europe and supports the regional supply of tissue and hygiene products through increased local production capacity.
The renewed Mariestad mill has doubled its annual production capacity to approximately 145,000 tonnes, improving the availability of tissue products across Scandinavia. By strengthening local production, Metsä Tissue aims to improve product availability, reduce supply chain risks and support customers throughout the region.
The modernised facility incorporates advanced tissue production technology, including a new tissue paper machine and three new converting lines for rolled and folded tissue products. Together, these investments support the efficient and responsible production of tissue papers for Metsä Tissue’s well-known brands, including Lambi, Serla and Katrin.
In addition to increasing capacity, the investment has significantly improved the mill’s environmental performance. The upgraded site delivers greater energy efficiency and lower water consumption, helping reduce emissions per tonne of production.
“With the Mariestad mill, we are setting a new benchmark for modern tissue production in Europe. This investment combines high-quality tissue paper products, efficient production and improved environmental performance – all built close to our customers,” said Jussi Vanhanen, President and CEO of Metsä Group.
The expanded and modernised Mariestad mill has been operating since autumn 2025 and is now running at full capacity. The facility produces tissue papers for a wide range of consumer and professional hygiene applications.
