Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has announced a significant €20 million investment to upgrade its Neusiedler mill in Lower Austria.

This investment aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency, and enhance operational safety at the facility.

The comprehensive upgrade project, set to be completed by the end of 2024, includes improvements to the pulp mill's recovery boiler, pulp dryer, steam accumulator, and steam turbine. These enhancements are expected to yield substantial environmental benefits, with greenhouse gas emissions projected to decrease by over 20%, NOx emissions by up to 10%, and gas consumption by approximately 25%.

Sakari Eloranta, Technical Director of Uncoated Fine Paper at Mondi, expressed enthusiasm about the project's progress: "We are happy to confirm that projects totalling €20 million have now been clearly defined and approved with work already in progress.'

Key Upgrades and Environmental Impact

The investment focuses on improving the efficiency of the recovery boiler, which generates steam to supply the mill with renewable energy. By increasing steam generation, the upgrades will allow the pulp dryer to operate emissions-free, transitioning from its previous reliance on natural gas. Additionally, the enhanced steam output will enable the turbine to produce more green electricity.

Alignment with Sustainability Goals

This initiative aligns with Mondi's MAP2030 sustainability commitments, which include science-based Net-Zero targets. The MAP2030 framework, launched in 2021, outlines Mondi's sustainability goals for the next decade, focusing on circular-driven solutions, empowered people, and climate action.

European Union Support

The investment program is partially funded by the European Union's NextGenerationEU recovery plan, demonstrating a collaborative effort towards sustainable industrial practices.

Mondi's Commitment to Sustainability

Mondi has a track record of environmental stewardship, having reduced its CO2 emissions by 45% since 2004. The company was recognized by CDP in 2020 as one of only ten companies worldwide with a 'Triple A' score for its environmental performance related to climate, forests, and water security.

As the upgrades near completion, the full benefits are expected to materialize from the first quarter of 2025, marking a significant step forward in Mondi's journey towards more sustainable paper production.
