Mondi Group has announced the permanent closure of its Stambolijski mill in Bulgaria following a major fire on 24 September that caused extensive damage to the mill’s 100,000-tonne-per-year kraft paper machine.

Although no injuries occurred thanks to the swift actions of staff and responders, the damage has halted production indefinitely.

After assessing the feasibility of repair and the investment required to keep the mill competitive, Mondi has decided to shut down operations at Stambolijski. The company plans to continue serving customers through its other kraft paper mills within its global network, citing this decision as the most viable option for maintaining operational and financial stability.

This closure impacts approximately 300 employees at Stambolijski, and Mondi has committed to providing full support to affected workers and the surrounding community. Roman Senecky, COO of Kraft Paper at Mondi, emphasized the company’s focus on supporting staff during this challenging period, saying, “We are committed to providing full support and collaborating closely with unions and the works council to find the best possible solution for all affected employees.”

Mondi is a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, employing 22,000 people in over 30 countries. With a focus on circular-driven solutions, Mondi’s 2030 sustainability commitments aim to create products that contribute to a better world.
