The Navigator Company announced on 28 August 2025 that it had temporarily reduced pulp production at its Setúbal mill in Portugal following a fire in July.
The incident, which occurred in the bleaching area, was quickly contained with no injuries reported.
As a result of the shutdown, around 25,000 tonnes of pulp were withdrawn from the market during the summer. To maintain operations, Navigator relied on pulp supplies from its Aveiro and Figueira da Foz mills, allowing printing and packaging paper machines in Setúbal to continue running without interruption. Production at the Setúbal mill resumed normal operations on 11 August.
Navigator is one of Europe’s leading producers of pulp, paper, tissue, sustainable packaging, and bioenergy, with operations spanning forestry, manufacturing, and research. The company has an annual pulp production capacity of 1.6 million tonnes and exports more than 90 percent of its products to over 130 countries.
