Norske Skog has provided important updates on two major projects: the containerboard production at its Golbey mill in France and the BCTMP study at Saugbrugs in Norway.
The Golbey containerboard project, initially set to begin in the second half of 2024, is now expected to start production in the first quarter of 2025. The commissioning of the roll warehouse, containerboard winder, and effluent station is currently underway. Pre-commissioning, including I/O ( input/output checkout), has begun for the OCC drum pulper and is scheduled to start in early October for Paper Machine 1 (PM1). However, delays in piping and electrical cabling have extended the project timeline.
As a result, the net investment has increased to EUR 320 million, up from the original EUR 300 million. Once operational in early 2025, Golbey’s containerboard production will be integrated into the company’s Packaging Paper segment.
"Completing the Golbey project is a top priority for both the entire Norske Skog group and myself. We are committed to finishing on time and within the updated budget, and we look forward to starting customer deliveries," said CEO Geir Drangsland. "The insights gained from this project will be valuable as we move forward with the BCTMP project at Saugbrugs."
In Norway, the main study for the BCTMP (Bleached Chemi-Thermomechanical Pulp) project at Saugbrugs has begun, with support from engineering consultants and vendor discussions. The final investment decision is expected in the first half of 2025.
