SCA has successfully completed a major expansion of its Chemi-Thermomechanical Pulp (CTMP) production capabilities at its Ortviken site in Sweden, tripling its capacity from 100,000 to 300,000 tons annually.
This state-of-the-art facility is a significant advancement in both scale and technology for the forest products leader.
Anders Granström, Mill Manager at Ortviken, noted the challenges faced during the project, including the global pandemic and the simultaneous demolition of parts of the old paper mill. Despite these hurdles, he confirmed that operations are proceeding as planned, with product qualification underway.
Key enhancements at the new facility include:
- Expanded wood handling capabilities with three chip silos
- Upgraded pulp processing equipment, including new refiners and a perivapor for steam separation
- A new cleaning stage for birch CTMP and a rebuilt bleach plant for two-stage bleaching
- Advanced dewatering and drying systems housed in a new building
Sara Qvist, product specialist for CTMP, highlighted the facility's ability to produce a wide range of high-quality pulp products: "We offer a broader freeness range and lower shive content, along with high brightness thanks to our two-stage bleaching system."
The Ortviken facility also emphasizes quality control with multiple online measurement points for pulp properties and enhanced safety features.
Stefan Sjöström, Director of Global Sales for CTMP at SCA, introduced the new product portfolio, SCA More, which offers six main grades tailored to various customer needs. He stated, "Our unique access to certified forests and advanced capabilities positions us to meet growing global demand for sustainable pulp products."
With this expansion, SCA is well-equipped to lead the pulp and paper industry towards a more sustainable future.
