Södra, a Swedish forest industry group, has deployed its first electric truck to transport pulp from its Värö mill to port terminals in Gothenburg and Varberg.
This initiative is part of the company's broader strategy to achieve net zero emissions of fossil greenhouse gases by 2040.
The electric truck, delivered by DFDS, is expected to save 48 tonnes of CO2 annually compared to a diesel-powered equivalent. It will carry the same load capacity of 40 tonnes as traditional fossil fuel trucks, ensuring no compromise in transportation efficiency.
. She added that this initiative would offer customers more sustainable transport solutions and provide valuable insights for future electric truck deployments.
Catrin Gustavsson, President of Södra Cell, emphasized the importance of this pilot project, stating, "The electrification of our transport is a natural part of our strategy to achieve our goal of net zero emissions of fossil greenhouse gases"Södra's commitment to climate neutrality extends beyond transportation. The company is exploring various electrification projects and leveraging its positive energy balance, having produced almost 2 TWh in 2023, to support the electrification of its vehicles.
This electric truck deployment represents a significant step in Södra's efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and lead the forest industry towards a more sustainable future.
Södra was founded in 1938 on the principle that unity brings strength. Today, it stands as the largest forest-owner association in Sweden, boasting 52,000 family forest owners as members. Collectively, Södra's members own a globally leading industry that transforms forest raw materials into renewable products, including pulp, timber, building systems, liquid bioproducts, and energy.
