Stora Enso, a leading provider of renewable products, has completed its internal investigation into the environmental violation discovered on August 15, 2024, at the Hukkajoki river in Finland.

The investigation, conducted with the assistance of an external legal expert, revealed that the incident resulted from a combination of factors including information flow issues, IT system functionality problems, and individual miscalculations.

The case, which is also under police investigation as a serious nature conservation crime, has prompted Stora Enso to take immediate action and implement several corrective measures.

Key Findings and Corrective Actions

The internal investigation highlighted the need for improved processes and systems within Stora Enso. In response, the company has announced four main corrective measures:

  • Increased resources for planning and monitoring harvesting operations
  • Enhanced focus on self-monitoring and information flow in sensitive nature areas
  • Commitment to developing advanced IT systems for automatic monitoring and alerts
  • Clarification of roles within harvesting operations

Additionally, Stora Enso will develop a forestry water programme in Finland, recognizing the importance of protecting water bodies in light of the Hukkajoki incident.

Ongoing Measures and Commitment

Stora Enso had previously announced several measures in response to the violation, including:

  • Suspension of harvesting in areas with restrictions under various environmental acts
  • Additional training for employees, contractors, and subcontractors
  • Inspections of completed harvesting operations in sensitive nature areas

These measures are proceeding as planned, demonstrating the company's commitment to preventing similar incidents in the future.

Hans Sohlström, President and CEO of Stora Enso, acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating, "Stora Enso's credibility has taken a serious blow. We have established a reputation as a leader in sustainability, and now our credibility is being severely tested.

The company has pledged to bear both environmental and financial responsibility for the incident. This commitment includes covering the costs of ongoing restoration work at Hukkajoki, which is being led by Metsähallitus, a state-owned forestry enterprise.
