AFRY, the global consulting and engineering firm, has released a new study outlining a roadmap for decarbonising Italy's pulp and paper sector, commissioned by Assocarta, the Italian paper association.
The study aims to support the sector in achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with European Union climate goals.
The report, "Competitive Decarbonisation of the Italian Paper Sector: A Possible Strategy Between Green Sources and Electrification," reveals that a 70% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 is crucial for meeting long-term decarbonisation targets. AFRY’s findings highlight the importance of improving energy efficiency, electrifying processes, and transitioning to low-carbon fuels.
Key strategies outlined include the decarbonisation of existing cogeneration plants using biomethane and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies in the short term, as well as the potential for using local resources like biomass and syngas. AFRY also emphasizes the need for policy support and access to green energy to accelerate the electrification of industrial processes.
Riccardo Siliprandi, Senior Principal at AFRY, noted that achieving decarbonisation while maintaining competitiveness requires a tailored approach, integrating technological advancements with sustainable practices. The study provides a comprehensive framework for Italian paper manufacturers to reduce their carbon footprint while staying competitive in the global market.
AFRY’s work is timely as the pulp and paper industry, a major contributor to Italy’s industrial landscape, faces increasing pressure to meet ambitious climate targets. The study offers actionable insights and a clear path forward for the sector, ensuring a sustainable future without compromising economic viability.
