Mercer International says it made measurable progress toward its 2030 sustainability targets in 2025, as the global forest products company released its annual report themed Resilience in Action.
The report highlights gains in renewable energy use, emissions intensity, responsible sourcing and employee engagement, while underscoring Mercer’s view that sustainability is becoming a core driver of long-term competitiveness.
Renewable Energy and Emissions
Mercer said 85% of the energy used across its global operations in 2025 came from renewable sources, moving the company closer to its target of 90% by 2030. It also reported an 11% reduction in company-wide Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions intensity, citing operational efficiency and reliability improvements.
Among its key initiatives, Mercer launched a pilot project at Mercer Peace River in partnership with Svante Technologies Inc. to evaluate bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). The project could capture up to 500,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ annually from the mill’s recovery boiler.
The company also advanced its e-mobility strategy by commissioning two electric chip trucks at Mercer Holz in Germany and an electric forklift at Mercer Timber Products in the United States.
Sourcing and Certification
Mercer said all of its managed forests remained certified to the SFI® Forest Management Standard, while chain-of-custody certification was maintained at all manufacturing sites.
The company also reported that 100% of the fibre used across its operations continued to come from sustainable and responsible sources.
Mercer said these practices support its long-term sustainability objectives and its efforts to align operations with evolving environmental expectations.
Safety, Governance and Partnerships
Employee participation in Mercer’s engagement survey increased to 67% in 2025, advancing toward the company’s target of 80% by 2030.
Mercer also received “B” scores across CDP’s Forests, Climate Change and Water Security questionnaires, reflecting its environmental management and disclosure efforts.
The company further expanded its industry engagement by joining the International Sustainable Forestry Coalition, a group focused on advancing the role of working forests in the circular bioeconomy.
Management View
President and CEO Juan Carlos Bueno said forest products have an important role to play in the transition toward renewable and lower-carbon economic systems.
“The products we make store carbon during their lifecycle while displacing fossil-based alternatives across the industries we supply,” he said.
Chief Sustainability Officer Bill Adams said Mercer’s focus is now on executing its 2030 sustainability goals through measurable progress, operational discipline and regulatory readiness.
The company said its 2025 Sustainability Report reflects a continued commitment to science-based sustainability initiatives despite challenging market conditions for the forest products sector. Mercer added that it remains focused on integrating sustainability into core business decisions while building long-term resilience through innovation.
