Cascades has received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its updated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets through 2035, covering both its own operations and selected emissions across its value chain.
The Quebec-based paper and packaging manufacturer aims to reduce its combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 67.2% by 2035, using 2019 as the baseline. These categories cover direct emissions from company operations and indirect emissions associated with purchased energy.
For Scope 3 emissions, Cascades has established a 41.3% reduction target over the same period, covering four categories: purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, and end-of-life treatment of sold products.
The Scope 3 target applies to these specified categories rather than all indirect emissions across the company's value chain.
The revised targets form part of Cascades' fifth Sustainability Plan for 2026–2030, introduced in June. The company previously received SBTi approval for its emissions reduction targets in 2021.
Progress and Operational Measures
According to Cascades, its combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions decreased by 32.6% between 2019 and 2025. The company considers this progress consistent with its trajectory toward the 2035 objective.
According to a FisherSolve comparison cited by Cascades, the company's mills generated 25% fewer GHG emissions than the North American pulp and paper industry average in 2025.
To pursue its updated targets, Cascades plans to continue reducing energy consumption, improving operational efficiency, electrifying selected equipment and exploring additional renewable electricity sourcing opportunities.
Hugues Simon, President and CEO of Cascades, said the approval reinforces the company's decarbonization strategy, which relies on established operational initiatives, innovation and disciplined investment management.
The validation confirms that the submitted targets meet SBTi criteria for science-based emissions reduction commitments. Achieving the reductions will depend on the implementation of Cascades' planned measures through 2035.
