Stora Enso has reached a significant milestone in its sustainability efforts, reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 53% by the end of 2024, surpassing its 2030 target of a 50% reduction.

This achievement highlights the company’s long-standing commitment to decarbonisation and its alignment with the 1.5-degree scenario of the Paris Agreement.

The reduction is primarily driven by a combination of fuel switches, energy efficiency improvements, and site closures. Despite the success, Stora Enso remains focused on maintaining this reduction and identifying additional opportunities for improvement as it continues its path toward net-zero emissions by 2050.

Hans Sohlström, President and CEO of Stora Enso, expressed pride in the company’s progress: “We are able to reduce our climate impact through greater efficiency in our operations and help our customers achieve their climate goals.”

The company has also set an ambitious target to cut Scope 3 emissions, which includes indirect emissions from its value chain, by 50% by 2030. Toby Croucher, Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized the importance of collaborating with suppliers and customers to meet these goals despite the challenges posed by the complexity of Scope 3 emissions.

Stora Enso's sustainability performance for 2024 will be detailed in the company’s upcoming Annual Report, set to be released on 13 February 2025.

Stora Enso is a global leader in renewable products, focusing on packaging, biomaterials, and wooden construction. With a strong commitment to sustainability, the company is one of the largest private forest owners worldwide. In 2024, Stora Enso employed approximately 19,000 people and generated EUR 9 billion in sales.
